As one of the largest industrial buildings constructed in New Zealand, Kmart’s award-winning North Island distribution centre is all about scale. Delivered in a contracted timeframe and with global supply chains providing numerous challenges, our national team supported the local Waikato team to deliver this 40,000m² facility in 2023 for our customer Tainui Group Holdings Limited.

A technically challenging programme from almost every angle, this $80m project stands tall as one of our most significant achievements. With planning commencing some six months prior to construction, the total build phase lasted 14 months to lock in with Kmart’s requirements. One of the most critical components to this project was the communication planning between all the parties involved. From working closely with TGHL and their focus on future-proofing their investments in the local region, to collaborating with international partners such as TMX on the design brief, our team were fully committed to delivering a world-class result.

The sheer scale of some of the numbers also represent how impressive these types of buildings are. Over ten hectares of concreted yards, 31 docks for inwards goods, fully automated parcel delivery systems and high bay racking. The scale and connectivity of Kmart will suit their distribution requirements for decades to come. Calder Stewart has significant experience building some of the largest and most complex buildings in New Zealand, and this is a key example of successfully delivering on a size and scale for major international operators.
