This was a significant infrastructure project and investment for KiwiRail. Calder Stewart’s approach to derisking key structural and design challenges combined with providing financial certainty, proved critical to the project’s success.

The project was originally an open ROI, of which Calder Stewart was shortlisted for tender. The brief had some prescribed design challenges which allowed our team to both consider and provide innovative alternate solutions during the tender process. Working with the Design Build format, we planned comprehensive structural designs, efficient foundation concepts and a new architectural approach for the office. A complex installation of a wheel lathe required some unique thinking outside the original scope to deliver further efficiencies to the construction programme. During the design phase, our team continued to optimise, including changing the foundations from a Gravel Raft to a Screw Pile System, with 489 piles to reduce the amount of cut and fill for the project. This upfront design thinking had the additional client benefit of reducing the overall project costs for KiwiRail. Additionally, an automatic fluid delivery and retrieval system enhanced the operational efficiencies, positioning the Waltham Mechanical Hub as a modern and forward-thinking railway maintenance and service operation.

The Waltham Mechanical Hub is notable for its range of features designed to optimise its functionality and sustainability. For example, a 300kW large solar panel array underscores the facility’s commitment to renewable energy, aligning with modern sustainability practices. The building is equipped with five overhead cranes, locomotive and inspection pits, and specialised equipment like a wheel lathe and drop table, emphasising efficiency in locomotive maintenance.
