The tuatara are an iconic species of reptile endemic to New Zealand. And now thanks to the local community, they have a new home to live in for generations to come. The project is part of Project 1225, a visionary initiative that includes the development of the Te Unua Museum of Southland.

Living on burrowed time

The tuatara enclosure designed to provide a long term commitment to conservation and to enhance Invercargill’s cultural assets. The Tuatara Trail connects their former home at the museum and art gallery to their new habitat in the animal reserve.

But there were several attempts to nail down the burrow designs for these unique reptilians. The tuatara themselves provide little input into the design process, however were fortunate to have the expertise of our team to iterate and mock up the winning designs.

The new facilities can be accessed from various points within Queens Park, providing a great opportunity for walkers to explore. Calder Stewart is pleased to have delivered the construction of the habitat to support the conservation of this treasured species – an icon of our storied past.

“The project needed a builder with the ability to adapt the designs for these unique creatures. We were only too happy to provide a suitable outcome.”
