Service Foods supplies hotels, restaurants, and retailers rights across New Zealand. With a growing demand for efficient storage, processing, and distribution, they required a custom-built facility in Wellington to optimise their operations.
Simplifying a complex multi-temperate environment
For a facility like Service Foods, with its multi-temperate and fast-paced operational requirements, our Design Build methodology is an ideal solution. The ability to have upfront design and project planning accuracy makes all the difference before the project comes out of the ground. The Service Foods team were behind this approach, as it worked well in their previous build with Cader Stewart in Auckland a few years prior. Design Build further provides clarity at an early stage for the facility’s operational capabilities.
Working with the elements
Every large-scale industrial project presents unique challenges, but due to the Wellington weather with persistent rain and poor ground quality, the team were hit with some unforeseen delays in the project schedule. We worked closely with our suppliers, subcontractors and of course the client project team to manage these factors. Careful project sequencing and contingency planning ensured that no time was wasted once work commenced. These challenges highlight Calder Stewart’s ability to adapt, ensuring that the client’s needs remained at the forefront throughout the construction process.

The facility is designed to meet the complex demands of food distribution and processing, featuring:
From a start up to a national operator
Service Foods started out as a family business in Christchurch in the early 1980s and has grown into a national operator, led by the Balar family.
Managing Director Aneil Balar has been driving the business for over 20 years and following an earlier project with Calder Stewart in Auckland, the opportunity to work together again was opportune. “Despite some early weather and ground condition issues, the Calder Stewart team worked on providing solutions to the challenges we had. From the team on the ground to the governance structure, they come highly recommended”, he said.
This development strengthens Service Foods’ position as a leader in New Zealand’s food service industry, enabling growth and further long-term operational success. We ae pleased to have once again worked with a special New Zealand family business.
