The Selwyn ReUse Shop is the latest component of the integrated waste facility at the Pines Resource Recovery Park in Rolleston. Calder Stewart was engaged by the Selwyn District Council (SDC) for this Design Build project, marking the first collaboration of its kind with a local government agency.
Changing up community perceptions
The project at the Pines Resource Recovery Park focused on transforming some of the negative perceptions associated with traditional waste disposal sites. The Park's vision is to evolve local perceptions from being a ‘dump’ to a multifunctional space where the community can recycle, plus learn more about sustainability and access a range of recycled goods. It was also the ideal opportunity to apply our Design Build methodology, focusing on innovative and sustainable design from the project's early stages.
Sustainability was a major driver of this project. The brief required the use of sustainable materials purposefully designed for the resource recovery park, with a focus on highlighting environmentally responsible construction. We used different building materials such as Engineered Glue Laminated (Glulam) timber and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) for the main structure, supported by robust steel brackets, bracing, and posts. This was the first time our team has used engineered timber in the main structure and the process is exposed to showcase the materials.

Reducing waste through design and construction was another focus for the project. The building utilises high-performance insulation, natural lighting, amongst other sustainable materials, with 44kW solar panels for power and a rainwater harvesting system for irrigation.
Throughout the building’s development, we worked to ensure the SDS’s vision was delivered. This project extends Calder Stewart's capability in the sustainable building sector and we’re proud to have delivered for SDC and the wider local community.
